On the other hand, therapeutic mouthwashes will contain ingredients that help with whatever issue you are addressing, whether it is dry mouth, gingivitis, halitosis, cavities, etc. These mouthwashes may be prescribed by your dentist or obtained over-the-counter at your local supermarket or drugstore. Your prescription mouthwash will have directions as to the proper dosage, how long you need to hold it in your mouth, and frequency of use.

As you can see, there is a difference between cosmetic and therapeutic mouthwashes. One masks the symptoms, the other attacks the cause of the symptoms.
